Finasteride

Finasteride is a medicine for baldness and enlarged prostate. Available in tablets with 1 or 5 mg finasteride.

Effect Finasteride

Finasteride will reduce the effect of testosterone on the hair follicles in the skin and the prostate.

Baldness

The hair of people who are/becoming bald is extra sensitive to the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT). The body produces this hormone from testosterone and will inhibit hair growth. Finasteride counteracts the effect of DHT, causing hair to grow again in places where hair growth previously stopped. You take a lower dose of 1 mg.

Enlarged prostate

The prostate gland grows due to the hormone dihydrotestosterone, a hormone that the body makes from testosterone. Finasteride inhibits this conversion, which causes the prostate to shrink. As a result, the urethra is no longer narrowed and urine can flow through better. You take a higher dose of 5 mg.

Finasteride is effective in treating male pattern baldness and an enlarged prostate. Male pattern baldness can be mentally difficult and can reduce self-confidence. For your own well-being, it is therefore advisable to treat these complaints.

When will you notice an effect?

Urinary problems:  after 2 to 6 months.
Baldness:  after 3 to 6 months. Note: if you stop taking this medicine, the new hair will also disappear within half a year to 1 year.

Possible side effects of taking Finasteride:

– Men: sexual dysfunction (e.g. impotence) if you stop taking this medicine.

Please note:   Use a condom if your partner is pregnant! Your sperm may contain finasteride. This is harmful to the baby.
