Take  flurazepam  half an hour before you want to go to sleep. Only take it if you have at least eight hours to sleep after taking it. If you have to wake up before that time, you will still suffer too much from the drowsy effect. How long? If you use this drug occasionally, it can help you sleep well. If you use it almost every night, the effect will disappear after a few weeks. Therefore, only use it in special situations. If you use it daily for more than two weeks, you run the risk of ‘withdrawal insomnia’.  Flurazepam  has a very long duration of action and is therefore not at all useful as a sleeping pill; that is why it is red in the Pharmacotherapeutic Compass. However, it is still used by people who can no longer and/or do not want to stop taking it, because withdrawal symptoms can occur when stopping. The drug should be reduced very slowly.
